- Primary Purpose of the Position
- The Upper School Choir Teacher inspires, educates, and guides students in developing their vocal abilities, musical literacy, and appreciation of choral music. The teacher directs choir ensembles, cultivates creativity and collaboration, and fosters excellence in performance while aligning with Graded’s mission and values. The role includes preparing students for concerts, festivals, and special events, and engaging them in meaningful artistic experiences that build community and cultural understanding.
- Instruction and Student Learning
- Plan and deliver engaging choral instruction that develops vocal techniques, sight-singing, music theory, and choral repertoire across diverse styles and traditions.
- Foster conceptual understanding by connecting music-making to historical, social, and cultural contexts.
- Differentiate instruction to meet varied skill levels, backgrounds, and vocal ranges.
- Encourage exploration, creativity, and collaboration through ensemble and solo performance experiences.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and student-centered environment that values diversity and artistic risk-taking.
- Assessment and Feedback
- Design and implement diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to track musical growth and ensemble progress.
- Provide timely, specific feedback that supports reflection and goal setting.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress clearly with students and families.
- Collaboration and Curriculum Development
- Collaborate with arts faculty to design and refine an aligned, conceptually rich choral curriculum.
- Engage in curriculum review that reflects diverse global repertoires and inclusive pedagogies.
- Work closely with the Band, Drama, and Visual Arts teams to support interdisciplinary performances and the annual musical production.
- Contribute to cross-divisional arts initiatives that connect upper school learning to broader community experiences.
- Professional Practice and Community Engagement
- Organize and lead concerts, festivals, and tours that celebrate student growth and artistic excellence.
- Manage choral resources and performance logistics effectively.
- Participate actively in professional learning, departmental meetings, and school-wide initiatives.
- Model professionalism and a commitment to community engagement through visible participation in arts events and communication with families.
- Certifications and Education
- Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or related field.
- Valid teaching certification/license (U.S. or internationally recognized equivalent).
- Desired
- Master’s degree in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or related discipline.
- Advanced training in vocal pedagogy, conducting, or music theory.
- Experience
- Required
- Minimum of five years of teaching and conducting experience, preferably at the high school level.
- Demonstrated success in directing choral ensembles and producing high-quality performances.
- Familiarity with advisory or homeroom programs supporting adolescent development.
- Desired
- Experience in international or multicultural school settings.
- Professional choral conducting or performance experience.
- Experience with music technology and digital tools for composition and rehearsal.
