  7. Primary Purpose of the Position
  8. The Upper School Music Teacher (Band) directs and inspires students in the study, performance, and appreciation of music. The teacher provides engaging instruction that develops musical skills, fosters creativity, and encourages collaboration, while promoting the values and mission of the school. The role includes organizing high-quality performances, building community engagement through music, and developing a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable band program.
  9. Main Duties and Responsibilities
  10. The teaching assignment typically includes Beginning Band, Junior Band, Senior Band, Jazz Band, and one or more semester or year-long music electives, depending on student enrollment and scheduling.
  11. Instruction and Student Learning
  12. Plan and deliver engaging band instruction that integrates performance, composition, improvisation, theory, and musical literacy.
  13. Foster deep conceptual learning by helping students make connections between music, culture, and history.
  14. Differentiate instruction to support varied musical backgrounds, abilities, and interests.
  15. Encourage reflection, risk-taking, and creativity through individual and ensemble performance experiences.
  16. Cultivate a safe, inclusive, and student-centered environment where all learners are empowered to explore and express themselves musically.
  17. Assessment and Feedback
  18. Design and use diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure musical growth and ensemble proficiency.
  19. Provide timely and constructive feedback to guide student reflection and improvement.
  20. Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate achievement with students and families through appropriate channels (gradebook, Toddle, conferences).
  21. Collaboration and Curriculum Development
  22. Collaborate with music and arts faculty to align vertical curriculum and foster interdisciplinary connections.
  23. Engage in curriculum review to ensure repertoire and instruction reflect diverse musical traditions
  24. and global perspectives.
  25. Contribute to collaborative performances and productions, including the annual musical and school-wide events.
  26. Work closely with the Arts and Activities departments to provide opportunities for student performances within and beyond the school community.
  27. Professional Practice and Community Engagement
  28. Organize and lead concerts, festivals, and tours that celebrate student learning and achievement.
  29. Maintain instruments, equipment, and resources, ensuring access and care for all students.
  30. Participate in departmental meetings, professional learning, and school-wide initiatives.
  31. Model professionalism in attendance, punctuality, and communication, and actively
  32. Engage with families and the broader community through music.
  33. Certifications and Education - Required
  34. Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field.
  35. Teaching certification/license (valid in the U.S. or internationally recognized equivalent).
  36. Desired
  37. Master’s degree in Music Education, Band/Instrumental Music, or related field.
  38. Certification in instrumental music instruction, ensemble leadership, or band/music pedagogy.
  39. Experience - Required
  40. Minimum of five years of classroom and/or ensemble teaching experience.
  41. Proven experience directing band ensembles or small groups, including programming concerts and events.
  42. Familiarity with advisory or homeroom programs supporting adolescent development.
  43. Desired
  44. Experience in international or multicultural school settings.
  45. Professional performance experience as a band musician.
  46. Experience with music technology and digital tools for composition and rehearsal.
  47. Experience designing and teaching conceptual units of learning.
  48. Experience preparing students for external festivals, competitions, or examinations.
  49. Experience implementing and supporting Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for students.
